Most probably, the Dutch encampement during the Siege of Breda in 1637 is depicted here. This subject was painted earlier by Van Calreat on Ruiterportret van prins Frederik Hendrik van Oranje-Nassau met in de achtergrond de belegering van Breda in 1637, which can be found in the collection of Nationaal Museum Paleis 't Loo in Apeldoorn (inv.no. 229). Regarding the age of the artist, these works were possibly painted as a remembrance of the Eighty-Years War.
