Description:

The Bridgewater Madonna
Oil on canvas, 85.8 x 63.3 cm
Provenance:
- Stampaert Meubelen, Gent (1980) (incl. copy of invoice)
- Private collection, the Netherlands, thence by descent to the present owner
Note:
Raphael (1483-1520) made many drawings and paintings of the Virgin and Child, partly inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence. Raphael's Virgin and Child, also referred to as 'Bridgewater Madonna' (c. 1507), can be found in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland (inv. no. NGL 065. 46). A copy of Raphael's Bridgewater Madonna was painted in Naples in 1843 by Carlo Dura, and possibly commissioned by Bernhard August von Lindenau (1779-1854), for his private collection. Von Lindenau bequeathed his collection to the State and the Staatliches Lindenau-Museum (Altenburg, Germany) was built to house it. Most likely, the painting remained in the museum until the outbreak of World War II, when the work was moved to the salt mines of Thuringa to prevent it from being looted. After the collection was dispersed in 1945, the painting presumably found its way to Belgium, where it remained in storage until 1980. The father of the present owner purchased the work in 1980. On the reverse of the original canvas is annotated "Carlo Dura copio da Raffaello Sanzio d'Urbino i Napoli 1843' (Carlo Dura copy of Raffaello Sanzio d'Urbino i Naples 1843).
