Description:

De Oude Vismarkt aan Het Steen met Waterpomp (The Old Fish Market at Het Steen with Water Pump)
Oil on canvas, 168.5 x 244.4 cm
Provenance:
- Collection Mrs. W.F. van Beuningen, Rotterdam
- Private collection, the Netherlands, thence by descent to the present owner
Note:
The location of this scene can be traced back to the Oude Vismarkt in Antwerp. Shown in the background is a water pump, dating back to 1663. Maria with child flaunts on a sphere, resting on four water-spewing dolphins. The pump column has long since disappeared, nowadays, the statue of the Virgin Mary can be found in the courtyard of the Provincial Silver Museum Sterckxhof in Deurne. On the far right a lady with glass pearls looks mischievously whilst passing the fish stand. This master has obviously been inspired by the work of Adriaen van Utrecht, who was a regular collaborator with leading Antwerp painters who had been pupils or assistants of Peter Paul Rubens, such as Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers the Younger, Erasmus Quellinus II, Gerard Seghers, Theodoor Rombouts, Abraham van Diepenbeeck and Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert.
