Note:
In the heart of 17th-century Leiden, young Karel van der Pluym was known for his curious eyes and steady hands. Born in 1625, he grew up surrounded by the bustling life of the Dutch Golden Age, a period of artistic brilliance and discovery. His fate took a significant turn when he became a pupil of Rembrandt van Rijn, whose studio was a hive of creativity and innovation. Under Rembrandt's watchful eye, Karel honed his skills, learning to master the play of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro. He marvelled at how a simple beam of light could transform a mundane scene into something extraordinary. This technique became a hallmark of his work, deeply influencing his artistic style. Despite not reaching the widespread fame of his mentor, Karel’s works remain highly sought after and appreciated.
