Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Drs. Margret Klinge, dated 5 September 1996, in which she states that the work dates from the artist's later period whilst being active in Brussels.

A comparable work, The Smoker (c. 1660), is part of the collection of the late art collector Jean-Pierre Pescatore (1793-1885). Until 1953, his collection was housed in Musée J.P. Pescatore Galerie Municipale Peinture Luxembourg (inv. no. 341). Currently the collection is housed in the Villa Vauban in Luxembourg City.
