Description:

Lion skull - Signed, dated 89 and numbered 4-11 l.r. - Lino cut with acrylic, 80.4 x 121.7 cm - Provenance: Auction Christie's, Amsterdam, 7 September 2010, lot 467 - Private collection, the Netherlands - N.B.: The work brings to mind the seventeenth century Vanitas-painting, symbolising transitoriness and the passing of time. With his lion skull Andriesse does not however refer to finity, but instead to the circle of life. It is as if the artist counters the anonimity of death by rendering the skull with individual features and a certain personality. The artist closely studied the complex anatomy of skulls and bones during a study period in the Zoölogisch Museum in Amsterdam, enabeling him to make very lively compositions out of various skeletons.
