N.B. II:
At the start of the nineteenth century eeuw portraiture was very popular in The Netherlands, many a prominent gentleman had his portrait painted. Likewise Marten Adriaan Beels, squire of Heemstede, Rietwijk and Rietwijkeroord and his spouse Charlotte Christine Gildemeester, with whom he married in 1813. Fashionable pastel portraits from Venice became popular. Felippo Tozelli, also from Venice, was active in Amsterdam between 1810 and 1815, working in the studio of the renowned portrait artist Charles Howard Hodges (1764-1837). Originally from England, Hodges had a large influence on the development of portraiture.
The promising Felippo was Hodges' most talented pupil, instructing him in working in pastel and later in oil paint. It is therefore of little surprise that Tozelli’s early works and portraits show little deviation from his master's works. His portraits were based on and inspired by those of Hodges, even including the typical framing. The pastel background is slightly coarse with stronger rubbing and the colours used are, just as with Hodges, clear and bright, but fewer in number. Due to his thorough training with Hodges, Felippo also produced many detailed portraits executed in the style of his master from circa 1816. Especially after Hodges produced less works in pastel and the demand for these grew, it was Felippo who mastered this technique. Many of the works he produced were subsequently regarded as works by Hodges. Portraits formerly attributed to Hodges are now re-attributed to the renowned Felippo Tozelli. As recorded in the monograph on Hodges by Baron van der Feltz, Hodges mainly worked in oil paint from 1828 onward, after which Felippo Tozelli worked to meet the unrelenting demand for pastel portraits.
