Description:

Multitude of figures on the Nieuwe Markt in Rotterdam
Signed and dated 1861 l.r.
Oil on canvas, 64 x 80.9 cm
Provenance:
- Auction Christie's Amsterdam, 21 April 1994, lot 306
- Private collection, The Netherlands
N.B.:
The background shows the former Prinsenkerk, which was demolished in the early twentieth century to make room for the new municipal library. The church owed its name to the adjoining Prinsenhof which, surrounded by the Gedempte Botersloot and the Nieuwe Markt, was one of the most visited areas of Rotterdam.
