Note:
After 1911, the artist and intellectual Jacoba van Heemskerck became deeply influenced by theosophy and Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophy. Her art reflected a quest to express spiritual values drawn from nature and life. Central to her work were symbolic forms like triangles, along with recurring motifs such as hills, bridges, and trees, depicted in bold contours. These elements were often arranged in rhythmic, geometric compositions using vertical lines, semicircles, and polygons. In the years 1914–15, her style evolved toward a dynamic interplay of lines, often featuring zigzag and triangular shapes. She frequently portrayed abstracted natural scenes, including a recurring mountain motif inspired by Mont Saint-Michel, likely from her earlier travels in Brittany. This mountain served as the basis for works like ‘Zeichnung No. 26,’ exemplifying her blend of mathematical precision and spiritual symbolism.
