Note:
Renowned for his refined portraits, prominent Dutch painter Jan Adam Kruseman captured the essence of his subjects with precision and artistic flair. His clientele included royalty, aristocrats, and affluent citizens, with notable commissions including portraits of King Willem I and King Willem II of the Netherlands. In the present lot, portraying the young Cornelia Aletta Pieternella van Karnebeek caressing a sheep, Kruseman showcases his mastery of Romantic aesthetics and his competence as a portraitist. Cornelia van Karnebeek was the daughter of jonkheer Herman Adriaan van Karnebeek (1797-1874), who was Vice Admiral and adjutant to Kings Willem II and III of the Netherlands. Kruseman had already portrayed Cornelia two years earlier in 1841, together with her brother Herman Pieter van Karnebeek.
