Opus - Signed l.r. - Mixed media on paper, 25.9 x 30.9 cm - N.B.: Maria Marevna was born as Maria Bronislavovna Vorobieff-Stebelskaya in Cheboksary, about 600 km east of Moscow, in 1892. Her mother was the actress Maria Vorobieva and her father the Polish Bronislav VikientievichStebelski. In 1910 Maria started her studies at the Stroganov Art Academy in Moscow. Her artist name was given to her by the Russian writer Maxim Gorki (1868-1936), whom she met on the island of Capri while on a trip to Italy. In the autumn of 1912 Marevna settled in Paris, where she visited the Académie Russe and the Académie Colarossi. Initially she painted in a pointillistic style. She established her studio in the La Ruche complex, where many East-European painters and sculptors resided. To earn some extra money Marevna assisted at the parties of the Académie Russe that were organised since 1911 and where paintings were exhibited and auctioned. The proceeds were intended for destitute Russians. In Paris Marevna exhibited at the Salon des Independantes of 1913 where she came in contact with, amongst others, the cubists Andrè Lhote and Pablo Picasso. Marevna first encountered the Mexican artist Diego Rivera in the crèmerie Chez Rosalie in the Rue Campagne-Première number 3 in 1915. Rivera had just returned from Spain together with his wife Angelina Beloff. Rivera confessed his love to Marevna and in August of 1916 they started an affair. Marevna visited Angelina in the hospital, after giving birth to son Diego. After the birth of Rivera's son Rivera lived with Maverna for a period, but due to the poor health of his son Rivera then alternated living with Marevna and Angelina up to 1921. On 13 November 1919 Marevna and Rivera had a daughter together, Marika. On the evening of the first Christmas day in 1920 Rivera came to tell her that he intended to return to Mexico after a trip to Italy. Rivera wanted to take Marika with him to Mexico. Rivera visited a few times and then left a sum of money with the Danish sculptor Adam Fisher for the support of Marevna and Marika before leaving for Mexico. Marevna stayed behind in Paris. She was regarded as the first Cubist artist. She herself called the combination of Pointillism and Cubism by the name of Dimensionalism. Maria Marevna passed away in London on 4 May 1984.
