This refined tronie-like portrait of a young man in an opulent costume exudes a playful and Rembrandtesque charm. The figure’s exotic attire, including a striking Mainzer Bärenmütze, evokes theatricality and self-assurance. It was painted by Mauritius-Heinrich Loder, a German active in Wallonia, known for works such as "The Adoration of the Shepherds" in Namur's Cathedral of Saint-Aubin. The young man’s hat closely resembles one worn by Loder in what is believed to be a self-portrait included in the Namur work, suggesting this painting could also represent Loder himself. Once part of the prestigious collection of the Crown Prince of Qatar at Paris’ renowned Hotel Lambert, the work is further distinguished by its high-quality frame, crafted by the royal framer of Copenhagen.
