(Workum 1876 - Bergen (NH) 1955) - Leda and the Swan - Signed with monogram and dated 1935 on the front. Signed on the reverse side. Alabaster on wooden base (with fitted lamp), H. 42.8 cm. N.B.: A Greek myth narrates how Leda, the wife of the Spartan king Tyndareos, arroused the love of Zeus. To win her for himself, he visited her by the river in the guise of a swan and had intercourse with her. She subsequently had four children, the divine twins Castor and Pollux and Helen of Troy and Clytaemnestra, of whom the former two were hatched from an egg.
