Description:

The Fortress Tower in Winter (c. 1862-1865)
Oil on panel, 24.3 x 17.8 cm
Exhibited:
Museum Flehite, Amersfoort, Dat raadt je de Koekkoek, 9 July - 5 November 2023
Note:
As the only member of the extensive Koekkoek painting family to specialise in Dutch cityscapes, Willem Koekkoek, the son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek Sr., found his great inspiration in Cornelis Springer. Willem Koekkoek's cityscapes are a combination of historical reconstruction and fantasy. His paintings were especially beloved abroad because they matched the idyllic image that people there had of old Dutch towns.
