Description:

A family of ducks by the water - Signed l.r. - Oil on canvas, 39.8 x 52.3 cm - Provenance:- Art Gallery L. van Zanten, Rotterdam - Private collection, The Netherlands - N.B.: Willem Maris was born as the eldest son of Mattheus Maris and Hendrika Bloemert in The Hague in 1844. He was the youngest of the three painting Maris brothers. His first drawing lessons were given by his elder brothers Jacob and Matthijs. Subsequently he attended the evening classes of the Haagse Academie for a period and studied under the cattle painter Stortenbeker. In the Mauritshuis in The Hague he copied works by the 17th century animal painter Paulus Potter. Willem Maris was not only known as a painter, but also as a draughtsman, etcher and watercolourist. He was a co-founder of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij. Maris mainly painted natural landscapes with animals, such as cows by a pond or ducks by a stream. His animal filled landscapes often refer to the French Camille Corot. In Oosterbeek, the Dutch Barbizon, and in Wolfheze he developed his artistic sense of landscape painting. There, in 1855 he met Anton Mauve with whom he became good friends. In 1863 he was given his first exhibition in The Hague. Together with Bernard Blommers he travelled in 1865 through the Rhine states and also to Norway. From 1869 onwards he remained living in The Hague, where he died at the age of 65. He was buried there at the Eik en Duinen cemetery. His son Simon also painted and wrote a book on this family of painters. Although as the youngest of the three Maris sons he was actually the most removed from realism as well as impressionism, he can be seen as the most realistic painter of the three. Others are of the opinion he was the more impressionistic of the three. Willem Maris was the only one of the painters of the The Hague School that worked in an impressionistic manner with bright colours and a light touch. He rendered simple country life with bold, impressionistic brushstrokes and his works seem to vibrate with life. 'I don't paint cows, I paint light effects' Maris himself pointed out. The rendition of light was of great importance to him. Most of his paintings therefore seem to be suffused with light. He is therefore also called the impressionist of the The Hague School, George Hendrik Breitner was one of his best known pupils.
